While many studies have been done documenting this fact, there is some confusion among feminists and policy makers about how to make sense of this phenomenon. Should youth prostitution be thought of as similar to adult prostitution, should it be considered child abuse, or should it be thought of as a combination of both of these theories? In order to answer these questions, and therefore improve advocacy, health services, and legislation surrounding youth prostitution, the authors of Being Heard interviewed multiple women who experienced youth prostitution. Through their voices and experiences this book unravels the complex set of understandings and issues at stake for young women prostitutes. It explores such issues as self-identity, experiences of violence, health and safety issues, and Canadian legislation and its relationship to youth prostitutes. While the stories contained within this book are troubling and difficult to read, they succinctly capture the complicated lives and experiences of young women in prostitution, and point to ways that advocates and legislators can extend support to this exploited population.
