Explores how and if young people use the Internet to find health information. Given that young people often have sensitive health questions and there is much health information available online, study looks at youth use of the Internet for health and nonhealth related information including their encounters and feelings about Internet filters and pornography. Results reveal that young people use Internet frequently to get health information. Concludes by recommending that additional research be done on the quality of online health information for young people, the role of search engines in shaping what information is found, and the possible impact of Internet filtering on young people’s access to health information.

Study examines whether Internet filters are likely to hamper young people’s access to health information. Measures the rate at which 7 filters block both pornography and non-pornographic health information during simulated health searches. Compares results for low, intermediate, and highly restrictive filter configuration levels. Concludes that using a more restrictive level does not significantly increase a filter’s effectiveness at blocking pornography, but it does significantly increase the overblocking of potentially important health content.
