Depending on ourselves: proceedings of the National Consultation on Women and Drugs
Presents the proceedings of the 'Depending on Ourselves' conference, a national consultation on women and drugs, held May 13 to 15, 1986. The Conference was held to provide an opportunity for women from across the country, whether in professional or voluntary positions, to meet and update information, exchange resources, share experiences, and identify future program options and strategies for their own commmunities. Section 1 of this report covers the presentations and workshops of Day 1 of the Consultation. It addresses women and drugs as a feminist issue; women and mental health; and recent data, implications, and current questions on alcohol, antidepressants, minor tranquillizers, and tobacco. Workshops considered the problems of substance abuse as they affect women in specific groups, locations and settings across Canada. The second section considers various approaches to women's substance abuse such as: community action, coping through sharing, managing (versus abstaining from) alcohol, building self-esteem, forming and using energy, and using the tool of feminist counselling. Section three deals with strategies for change. It looks at elements of successful prevention and education-oriented projects and calls for non-sexist research, better community support for women's shelters and helping groups, and political action.
