The Candian Network on Women and Tobacco was developed to foster inter-organizational collaboration on women and tobacco issues. It is a program of the Women and Tobacco Working Group, a subcommittee of the Steering Committee of the National Strategy to Reduce Tobacco Use (NSTRTU). The purposes of the network are: (1) to prevent and eliminate tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke among women, (2) to increase the effectiveness of women in the tobacco control field, and, (3) to increase the involvement of other women in this issue. Efforts to address tobacco use in Canada revolve around three main goals: Prevention, Protection, Cessation. This means developing strategies to prevent young women from starting to smoke, protecting women from exposure to tobacco smoke, and supporting women who are smokers in their efforts to become smoke-free. To address these three goals, four key areas for action are: research, programs, public policy, and social marketing.
